South African Masters Swimming
32nd Long Course Championships

held at the Kings Park 50m pool in Durban in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal
from the 16th to the 19th of March 2016.

The SAMS Open Water Championships were held as a Surf Swim
at the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club in Durban on the 20th.


2474 entries for individual events were received from 460 swimmers (241 women and 219 men) from 23 clubs.

14 were from foreign swimmers from Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Russia & Hungary.

429 swimmers eventually competed.

406 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.

10 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events.

374 relay teams were entered.

There were 160 swimmers entered who were 60 years and older.
47 of them were 70 years and older.
11 of them were 80 years and older.

The oldest female competing was Grace Isaac (84) from the Spencer Club in Great Britain.
The oldest male competing was Ted Beukes (86) from Coelacanth MSC.

In the Open Water events 205 swimmers entered and 153 competed.

COLOURS

South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 96 times by 31 different South African Swimmers during the championships.
Heather Campbell, Di Coetzee, Tim Shead, Cecilia Stanford & Andre Steynberg bettered the SAMS Colours qualifying time in all 6 of their individual events.

37 swimmers (23 women & 14 men) who qualified throughout the 2015/2016 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.

In addition there were 2 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2015/2016 season but have yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.

There were also 3 swimmers who had qualified in previous seasons and had now competed in their 3rd SAMS LC Nationals. They were awarded these SAMS Colours.

3000m and 1000m Open Water Swims were held on Sunday 20th March at the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club.

Total scores - The winning Club (Coelacanth MSC) will be presented with the SAMS Open Water Club Trophy at the Awards Function next year.
